邻苯二甲酸二丁酯是聚氯乙烯最常用的增塑剂，可使制品具有良好的柔软性，但挥发性和水抽出性较大，因而耐久性差。还是硝基纤维素的优良增塑剂，凝胶化能力强，用于硝基纤维素涂料，有良好的软化作用。稳定性、耐挠曲性、黏结性和防水性均优于其他增塑剂。也可用作聚醋酸乙烯、醇酸树脂、硝基纤维素、乙基纤维素及氯丁橡胶、丁腈橡胶的增塑剂。
本品对人会产品一定的伤害,最敏感的人可嗅到的阈浓度为0.00026mg/L。本品对眼的光感反射作用的阈浓度为0.00016mg/L，而对脑生物电活动的阈浓度为0.00011～0.00012mg/L。生产增塑剂的工人可患多发性神经炎，脊髓神经炎及脑多发神经炎。
